Children should be kept away from all watercourses with thunderstorms and heavy rainfall accumulation forecast for later today, the local conservation authority is advising.

Environment Canada is warning of rainfall in the range of 50 to 75 mm, which will cause higher than normal water levels and flows in all Newmarket and area watercourses, the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority advises.

"As a result, local streams and rivers will become dangerous, especially in the vicinity of culverts and bridges," said the LSRCA statment. "Children should be advised to stay away from all watercourses."

As well, flooding of low-lying areas could occur.

The advisory is in effect until Thursday, Aug. 27.
