The ME & Lau Family Foundation is accepting applications for the ME & Lau Family Foundation Scholarship in partnership with Markham’s Community Living York South.
Created and funded by the ME & Lau Family Foundation, this scholarship is meant to encourage and promote the attainment of higher education goals for individuals with a proven financial need in York Region.
Any Grade 12 student in York Region who will be attending a post-secondary institution (university or college program) in the fall of 2023 with a family income threshold of $135,000 or less is encouraged to apply.
Priority will be given to students who have demonstrated a high level of academic achievement, who have made a positive contribution to people with intellectual disabilities through involvement in extracurricular activities and who have made significant contributions of time and energy to community services programs.
Michelle Lau and Edward Lau cofounded ME & Lau Family Foundation in 2017 with a mission to raise funds to support charitable organizations that provide services to people with intellectual disabilities, and the related sector, in the Greater Toronto Area.
Over the years, Michelle has been dedicated to supporting visible minorities with an emphasis on helping women and children, people with low income, new immigrants and people with intellectual disabilities, while Edward is active in community volunteering for people with intellectual disabilities.
On May 3, the couple were awarded the Jim Turner Memorial Award for Outstanding Voluntarism from Community Living Toronto.
The scholarship amount is $1,200 and the application deadline is Sept. 30, and the award presentation ceremony will take place at Varley Art Gallery on Nov. 25. More information is available on melaufamilyfoundation.com.
