The GO-VAXX bus is stopping in Newmarket this weekend to bring first, second or booster doses of the COVID-19 as the region boasts "excellent progress" with vaccinations.

The bus is stopping at the Upper Canada Mall and will accept walk-in appointments from noon to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19. It will then make stops in Whitchurch-Stouffville and Markham.

All York Region Public Health, hospital and partner-led clinics will be closed on Monday, Feb. 21 for Family Day.

This come as the region reports that 559,471 booster doses have been administered in York Region, accounting for 46.5 per cent of all residents.

"York Region continues to make excellent progress with booster doses," said Patrick Casey, director of corporate communications.

The province has expanded eligibilty for booster doses in Ontario, meaning as of Friday, Feb. 18, individuals aged 12 to 17 can book an appointment or walk-in to receive a booster at all York Region Public Health clinics, he added.

To date, 61.2 per cent of York Region children aged five to 11 years have received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and 30.5 per cent have received a second dose.

With vaccination rates high, Casey said the need for mass clinics is being reviewed..

"In collaboration with municipal and hospital partners, York Region continues to assess the ongoing need for mass vaccination operations; as work continues on plans to scale down and demobilize mass vaccination efforts, further updates will be shared," he said.
