York Region Public Health has officially confirmed that Mr. Right brand keampferia galanga powder was the source of several serious illnesses linked to a restaurant in Markham.

Medical officer of health Dr. Barry Pakes said that a package marked as the powder with code AT154 tested positive for aconite toxin. The toxic substance is derived from plants and if consumed can cause a number of symptoms including numbness or tingling of the tongue or limbs, diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, headache, and irregular or rapid heartbeat.

Twelve people became ill after eating the toxin at Delight Restaurant and BBQ in Markham on Aug. 28. According to the public health unit, all are recovering.

"We are pleased to report the condition of the affected individuals is improving and only one remains in hospital," Pakes said.

Another package of Mr. Right brand keampferia galanga powder with the code AT119 tested negative for aconite.

"In our previous communication, we recommended individuals and businesses dispose of all Mr. Right brand keampferia galanga powder regardless of the packaging code. We continue to recommend this action out of an abundance of caution as we do not know if there was cross-contamination of this product, and the consequences of consuming even a small amount are very severe," Pakes said.

As a precaution, a voluntary recall of all Mr. Right brand keampferia galanga powder has been issued.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) recall, dated Sept. 2, said you should not consume, use, sell, serve, or distribute recalled products.

It also said CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation that could lead to further recalls. It is also verifying that the recalled products have been removed from the marketplace.

The recall expands outside of York Region, as CFIA said Mr. Right brand keampferia galanga powder has been sold in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec, and may have been distributed in other provinces and territories.

If you think you have become sick from consuming recalled products, you are advised to contact your health-care provider.
