The Food Bank of York Region is able to distribute grocery gift cards to its network of food pantries and meal providers supporting residents struggling with food insecurity, thanks to $216,000 provided by the Regional Municipality of York community investment fund.

The disbursement of the funds will be determined on the number of food-insecure individuals served by each qualifying local food pantry and meal provider, according to a FBYR news release. The goal is to support food-insecure individuals to purchase foods specific to their individual needs.

“A growing number of York Region residents are facing challenges with food insecurity,” said York Region chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “Through the community investment fund, we are supporting residents in our communities to provide healthy, nutritious food and assist with mental and physical health.”

“On behalf of all our neighbours in our community who need a bit of extra help right now, thank you to York Region’s community investment fund for this funding,” stated Adrian Bain, executive director of the Newmarket Food Pantry. “The impact will be felt immediately as individuals will have greater choice and flexibility to fulfil their own food-related needs this holiday season.”

“We are grateful to York Region for this funding to purchase and distribute grocery gift cards,” Alex Bilotta, founder and CEO of the Food Bank of York Region, stated. “These gift cards will enable people struggling for their daily sustenance to purchase fresh nutritious food and dietary items that may otherwise be inaccessible to them.”

Food Banks Canada’s recent report on food insecurity in 2023 highlighted an alarming trend of increased food insecurity, with nearly seven million Canadians struggling to put food on the table due to the rising cost of living. The Food Bank of York Region likewise reported a significant increase in demand for food assistance in 2023, and stated it is appreciative of this funding that will enable them to further support local food pantries and meal providers.
