Central York Fire Services responded to two fires in Newmarket Saturday morning, including a house fire caused by a fallen heat lamp that sent three residents to hospital for possible smoke inhalation.

Firefighters first responded to a call at 12:10 a.m. to a Queen Street house, where a fire in a shed was quickly extinguished before it could spread to a neighbouring garage, according the CYFS incident report.

There were no injuries, and the cause of the fire isn't known.

Later in the morning, at 6:36 a.m., CYFS responded to call to a semi-detached dwelling with apartments on the main floor on Sunnypoint Drive.

On arriving, firefighters did not observe a fire, however, after investigation, crews determined that a heat lamp in a room on the main floor had fallen and had been smouldering all night, eventually burning a hole through the floor.

The occupants were evacuated from the house, as fire crews cut around the smouldering floor to eliminate the hazard. Air monitoring was conducted and the fire was fully extinguished, according to the fire incident report.

Two occupants from the main floor apartment and one from the basement apartment were assessed by York Region Paramedic Services for smoke inhalation and transported to Southlake Regional Health Centre as a precaution. The occupants have since been released from hospital.

York Regional Police and York Region Paramedic Services were on scene to assist at both incidents.
