If you have been wanting to see some quality, professional live theatre – mark down Nov. 7 to 9 on your calendar!

For a mere $15 a night, view two outstanding one-act plays, or for a quite reasonable $40, you can purchase a three-night Festival Pass and see all six plays of this year’s York Region Festival of One Act Plays.

In fact, the Festival is three nights – six wonderful plays – on one stage in Festival Square in the historic Old Town Hall in downtown Newmarket. It all starts Thursday, Nov. 7, continues Friday, Nov. 8 and wraps up with two sensational plays on Saturday Nov. 9. All this is being put on by the venerable Very Useful Theatre Company, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Newmarket.

And as mentioned for the very reasonable $40 Festival Pass, you can take in not one, but three world premieres, plus the one-act winner of the Toronto Fringe Festival 24-hour Contest. Sound good? You bet!

The festival gets underway at 7:30 p.m. (doors open 7 p.m.) on Thursday, Nov. 7, featuring the world premiere of a the light comedy True Love and the Nature of Miracles. It’s written by Canada's Emerging Playwright David Healy a new play development series, which is a world premiere. This is followed by another world premiere the Remains of Greatness by Brooke Friendly – another new play development series, and a world premiere.  

Friday, Nov. 8 night’s One-Act Plays showcases a hilarious comedy The Next Ivan Sharansky, a world premiere written by Los Angeles based playwright Jim Geoghan the executive producer of The Disney Channel's The Suite Life on Deck. This is followed by an intense drama Out by Toronto playwright Ron Fromstein, the play was the winner of the Toronto Fringe Festival 24-hour contest --  a “new play development series: and a world premiere.” 

Saturday, Nov. 9,  the  playbill features a Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) play Junie B Jones is not a Crook, directed by Joanna Kaufman. Last year’s TYA play Ordinary Princess was well-received and this year’s TYA play will again feature emerging young actors from the local area. Under the Bright Sun by Norm Foster is another classic comedy by Newmarket’s favourite son Norm Foster. The festival awards ceremony will take place in the snapd Auditorium in the Old Town Hall after the Saturday night’s performances.    

The Very Useful Theatre Company is a not-for-profit organization, the goal of which is to encourage and facilitate the performing arts and to utilize theatrical performances as fundraising events for charitable organizations in our community.
