The federal government is giving the tourism sector in York Region and neighbouring areas an $8-million boost as part of COVID-19 relief efforts.

The feds announced the funding today, April 6, as part of a $68.5-million investment in all southern Ontario regional tourism organizations. Central Counties Tourism will receive $8 million, which York Region operates in partnership with Durham Region and Headwaters Tourism Region. It will allow the regional organizations to provide up to $100,000 to tourism businesses to develop new products and services.

“The government of Canada investment announced today will ensure small tourism businesses and organizations in southern Ontario are supported as they find new and innovative ways to attract visitors,” said Helena Jaczek, minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, in a news release.

Tourism businesses throughout York Region can apply online for the funding. Overall, the federal government estimates the $68.5-million investment will support 1,340 tourism entities and maintain 4,200 jobs.

The tourism sector has been significantly impacted by the pandemic and the limitations on events. That also led to the provincial government announcing a “staycation” tax credit for Ontario residents using accommodations within the province.

“This opportunity to facilitate investment into tourism product and destination development will help accelerate the recovery of the tourism economy within Ontario’s southwest and across the province,” Southwest Ontario Tourism Corporation board chair Susan Judd said.

The funding is still pending the signing of contribution agreements. Besides the forthcoming distribution from regional tourism organizations, those in the sector can also apply for the Tourism Sector Relief Fund through the FedDev Ontario website.

“Our government will continue to ensure the tourism sector has the tools it needs to recover so it is well-positioned for a strong and resilient economic future,” Jaczek said.
