The Newmarket Community Action Table and United Way GTA have announced the recipients of the first round of 2023 quick action grants.

The grants will go toward four resident-led events that each received $2,000 and one agency-led event that received $8,000. All events will support the Newmarket community.

Set for June 24, the Strawberry Farm Community Meet and Mingle was one of the recipients.

It will offer low-income families and seniors a chance to socialize and engage with the community by organizing a strip to Strawberry Creek Farm. Participants will be able to pick strawberries, participate in activities, and will be provided with lunch.

Neighbourhood BBQs is a resident-led initiative focused on fostering connections and togetherness while aiming to bring residents closer, strengthen relationships, and create a welcoming environment. The first of two events was held June 15 at Maple Leaf Public School, with a second barbecue set for later this summer where neighbours can share a meal.

InJoyness: Women’s Wellness Group was also a recipient of the grant. A six-week program for all women commencing in early July, the sessions focus on self-awareness and mindfulness with the goal of empowering women, promoting self-discovery, and fostering well-being.

Sharing is Caring, is a community safety barbecue event this summer that received funding as well. It focuses on bringing the community together and raising awareness of community safety at the Newmarket Church of Christ and will also have sports and activities for kids.

Running July 4 to Aug. 11, the Boys and Girls Club Summer Camp: Fun Fitness and Community Connection event will offer diverse activities while helping children develop social skills, creativity, and imagination through cooperative play and exploration. The agency-led event will be hosted at JRL Bell Public School.

The grants provide residents with resources to implement their ideas to address the issues of mental well-being and housing stability in the community.
