East Gwillimbury, Markham, Vaughan restaurants charged with food safety violations

Three restaurants in York Region were charged for public health violations by York Region inspectors last week.

Milestones in East Gwillimbury at 18162 Yonge St. was charged Aug. 15 for food premises not being maintained with food handling room in sanitary condition, according to the report for inspections made Aug. 14 to 20 by York Region Community and Health Services, health protection division.  

The charge stems from a re-inspection after initially being flagged for failure to ensure equipment surface cleaned as necessary; failure to maintain hot water sanitizer at 82°C or greater and/or for at least 10 seconds; failure to maintain dishwasher wash water between 60°C and 71°C; failure to provide adequate protection against the entrance of pests; and failure to maintain the premises in a clean and sanitary condition, according to the report.

Food education was carried out during the initial inspection and again upon the inspection where the food premises were still found to not be in sanitary condition, according to the report.  

Nantha Express in Markham at 2 - 2002 Middlefield Rd. was charged Aug. 15 for displaying potentially hazardous foods at internal temperatures between 4°C and 60°C. 

The restaurant was also found not to be in compliance with having a certified food handler or supervisor present during all hours of operation, the report states.

A correction was made during the inspection and food handlers education was carried out on site.

M Chá Bar in Vaughan at  72 - 3175 Rutherford Rd. was charged Aug. 14 with failure to provide hand washing stations with adequate supplies.

Among the items the restaurant was found not to be in compliance with were failing to ensure equipment surface cleaned/sanitized as necessary; failure to maintain equipment in good repair; failure to keep washroom equipped with adequate supplies (toilet paper, garbage can, soap, hand dryer or single-use towels); failure to ensure presence of certified food handler or supervisor during all hours of operation, the report states.

Food handler education was carried out on site, according to the report.
