David West wins byelection to be Richmond Hill's new mayor

The mayor-elect is being sworn into office today, Jan. 25, to serve until the current term ends in November 2022

Mayor-Elect David West will be sworn in to office this afternoon, Tuesday, Jan. 25, and will serve the rest of the present term of council, ending on Nov. 14, 2022. The swearing-in ceremony will be made available on Richmond Hill’s YouTube channel.

In the byelection, 38,909 votes were cast, representing a 32 per cent voter turnout.  Approximately 93 per cent of votes were cast online.

"The city’s elections team worked hard to deliver a fair byelection while addressing the challenges of the pandemic. I am pleased we were able to provide voters safe, secure and convenient options to cast their vote either online or in-person," said Stephen M.A. Huycke, city clerk.
