CYFS trades fire hoses for soapy brushes at car wash for United Way

Fire fighters and volunteers are cleaning cars in support of United Way at the new station in Aurora until 5 p.m.

Fire fighters and volunteers from Central York Fire Services (CYFS) grabbed a different kind of hose to clean off cars in support of United Way today.

The new station on Earl Stewart Drive in Aurora was transformed into a drive-thru style car wash on Saturday. Members of the community could come and get their car cleaned in turn for a donation to United Way.

It was an assembly line style operation with volunteers made up of high school students, co-ops, college students and off-duty members from CYFS collecting donations, hosing down cars, soaping them up, hosing them off again, and finally squeegeeing the glass. Meanwhile drivers could enjoy it all from the comfort of their vehicles.

Central York Professional Firefighters Association was hosting the fundraiser and president Jason Beauving said it was a success so far with a steady stream of cars in the first hour.

When asked why it's important for them to give back to the community he said "it’s what we do. We do it when we come to work every day and this is just another way to give back to the community."

CYFS also takes parts in various fundraisers, boot drives, and other community events throughout the year. This car wash was the first of its kind, but Beauving said he hopes they will do it again in the future.

“The money goes to a good cause and anytime we can get out in the sun and everyone’s having fun we’ll do it,” he said.

The weather cooperated for the car wash with warm temperatures, blue skies, and a bit of a breeze to keep everyone cool while they worked.

The car wash runs until 5 p.m. on May 13 at 300 Earl Stewart Dr.
