Canoe tour offers unique glimpse into Wye Marsh

Voyageur-style canoe tours allow visitors to get off the beaten path and on to marsh channels home to turtles, waterfowl and river otters

The Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre is an oasis for nature lovers.

While there are lots of ways to explore the 3,000 acres of provincially significant wetlands and woodlands, a canoe may offer one of the most unique perspectives to this Tay Township sanctuary that is home to listed species such as Blanding’s Turtles and Trumpeter Swans.

From May to October, Wye Marsh offers one-hour guided, voyageur-style canoe tours.

"Experience the unique opportunity to head off the beaten path and onto the secluded marsh channels that are home to the midland painted turtle, bullfrogs, red winged blackbirds and river otters," urges the website.

While on tour, visitors can expect to learn about the Wye Marsh's ecological, cultural and historical significance while "enjoying a relaxing and breath-taking paddle."

The canoe trips are offered only on weekends at 2 p.m.

No pre-registration is required or available. Visitors can just sign up for a canoe upon their arrival and are urged to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to departure time.

No experience is necessary and all ages are welcome, however children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

The tours are an additional $8 per person; that includes all equipment including a PFD, paddle and rope/whistle.
