Nothing breeds success like success. Following on from their inaugural event last fall, the Charitable Trust of Canadian Federation of University Women Aurora/Newmarket is hosting a spring Books and Bottles event.

The Spring Books and Bottles online sale and bottle drive runs March 22 through to April 5 and is open to the public.

This is the perfect time to stock up your summer reading. Books for the cottage. Books for the patio. Books for the hammock.

And to get into a bit of spring cleaning by dropping off your empty wine, beer and liquor bottles and cans. Every little bit helps.

Last October, a team of four “librarians” launched the club’s first event, selling over 1,000 books to club members and local residents and collecting over $850 in bottle returns.

The fall event raised $3,173 which will fund two scholarships for local 2021 graduates. The Charitable Trust of the CFUW Aurora/Newmarket has a goal of awarding eight scholarships through their fundraising efforts.

The goal for this sale is $4,500. And they’re on their way with almost $450 in bottle returns collected already.

“We’re motivated by the great support we had in the fall when we surpassed our bottle challenge of $500 and collected over $800 in bottle returns. So, this round, we raised our goal to $1,000,” said Valerie Hume, fundraising chair for the Charitable Trust and one of the sale’s librarians. “Folks can drop off their empties when they pick up their books.”

For the past three weeks, the library team has collected books from club members, neighbours, family, and friends. Over 2,500 books have already been entered into the library database for the online book sale. Popular fiction, book club favourites, non-fiction and young adult literature titles are available.

More features have been added to the database to make it even easier when searching for that perfect book.

There are more details on sub-genres of each title, as well as indicating if a book is part of a series. For example, you can search by non-fiction or memoir or Can Lit or find book #5 in that mystery series you love.

Beginning March 22, interested buyers can visit the CFUW website, where the collection is divided among four club members who have set up “libraries”. To purchase a book, email the “librarian” of that branch to reserve the selection. Arrangements will be made for COVID-safe porch pickup and cash/cheque payment.

The book list is posted on the CFUW’s Books and Bottles page and updated daily. The pricing for this year’s sale is $5 for hardcover books and $3 for paperbacks. Juvenile and Young Adult selections are $1.

“Our goal for this sale is $4,500 – enough for three scholarships! But we also have the goal of bringing our membership together after the winter months of lockdown. Whether you drop off some books or bottles or buy some books, or even share the list with your friends and family, you are adding to the spirit and energy that make CFUW so wonderful,” says Fulvia Cantarutti, president of the Charitable Trust and one of the Aurora book sale librarians.
