Author Martha Schabas will be discussing her novel, My Face in the Light, at the first book chat event of 2023 presented by the Friends of the East Gwillimbury Library.

The Feb. 9 event from 7 to 8 p.m. will be a virtual one – "not because of health restrictions but because of past success," according to a news release.

“During COVID, we organized five virtual events and as a result have attracted followers from all over North America,” Friends of the East Gwillimbury Library president Catherine Brydon said. “We did not want to ignore their support by going back to fully in-person events, so in the winter, we are going fully virtual so one can join in from down the street or across the country.”

This is the second novel, which was released last spring, for the former Globe and Mail dance critic. Her writing has been described as “intelligent, nuanced, lyrical and insightful.”

The main character, Justine is a young woman facing a personal crisis as she grapples with her art, her own identity and how to live the rest of her adult life.

Schabas will be in conversation with Lena Singh, a member of the East Gwillimbury Public Library board.

Tickets for a link to the event cost $15 and are available here. Or, for $45, the ticket includes the book, which must be picked up at the Holland Landing Library, in East Gwillimbury. All proceeds support the East Gwillimbury Public Library.

In 2022, the Friends donated $4,000 to the library and a sold-out in-person event in November with Ann-Marie MacDonald raised $2,100. The Friends of the EG Library have hosted almost 60 authors since 2004.
