Thanks to Allan Carswell and the Carswell Family Foundation, there is a new partnership between AS York and York University.

With funding from the foundation, York University will establish the Helen Carswell Research Chair in Dementia Care in the university's Faculty of Health; provide funding for graduate research fellowships in dementia care for masters and PhD students; and support a program of evaluation, research and knowledge dissemination led by the dementia chair and working collaboratively with AS York.

Helen Carswell, Dr. Carswell's wife, has been living with Alzheimer's disease for more than two decades.

"We hope this partnership will further validate the good work that is being done in our programming, and help support future initiatives," said Loren Freid, CEO of AS York.

The partnership will allow for "ground-breaking research into Alzheimer's disease and improve the lives of people (living) with this disease," said Rhonda L. Lenton, York University president and vice-chancellor at this morning's funding announcement.

Dr. Carswell spoke about his wife of 63 years and the importance of AS York's programs and services for Helen and his family.

"I have a close association and friendship with the special people at the Alzheimer Society of York Region. Not only are they highly skilled and professional, they are exceptionally caring individuals..."

Thank you Dr. Carswell and the Carswell Family Foundation for this amazing opportunity. We look forward to sharing our knowledge and collaborating to improve the lives of those impacted by dementia.

September is Alzheimer's Awareness Month.
