Alair Homes proudly took part in Hockey Helps the Homeless – a national event that fundraises and supports Canadian homeless shelters by hosting numerous hockey tournaments all over the country.

On Friday, Nov. 15, Alair Homes sharpened their skates and entered a hockey team for a 10-team round-robin tournament at the Angus Glen and Centennial Community Centre to fundraise and help support the cause. #TeamAlair was made up of local builders and small business owners from Newmarket, North York, Barrie, Aurora, Midland and Peterborough.

Each team got the opportunity to play with an NHL alumni hockey player, who played the role as team captain, with the top fundraiser awarded their first choice of their favourite hockey pro.

According to the State of Homelessness in Canada 2016 report, it’s estimated that at least 235,000 Canadians experience homelessness in a given year. With homelessness at an all-time high and the weather dropping down to below zero, it’s more important than ever to help spread awareness and support those in need.

Hosted in the York Region, this year’s tournament raised an outstanding $264,449 with a $21,559 fundraising contribution from Alair Homes, to help local homeless support agencies across Canada.

One member of #TeamAlair raised the most of any individual player: Christopher Smeeth raised an impressive $13,238! All funds are invested in people, projects and programs aimed at ending homelessness in Canadian communities.

Joining #TeamAlair as the captain was Irish-Canadian and former NHL pro Owen Nolan. Throughout his 18-year hockey career, Nolan played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Quebec Nordiques, Colorado Avalanche, San Jose Sharks, Phoenix Coyotes, Calgary Flames, Minnesota Wild and a season with the ZSC Lions of National League A.
