9 candidates vying to be next mayor of Richmond Hill

Four current councillors are among the certified candidates for the January 2022 byelection to fill the vacancy left by Dave Barrow's resignation

Nine candidates are running in the January 2022 byelection to be Richmond Hill's mayor following the resignation of longtime mayor Dave Barrow last September.

The list includes current councillors Godwin Chan, Joe DiPaola, Carmine Perrelli and David West.

Other certified candidates are Ruida Tian, Rona Wang, Juni Yeung and Michael Zambakkides. Also running is Susan Korman, who initially withdrew her nomination Nov. 24, however she refiled Nov. 29.

Eligible voters are encouraged to confirm their information is correct and complete on the voters list to ensure a smooth voting process online or by calling the helpline at 905-771-5555,

Voter information packages containing a unique voter ID number and PIN, as well as instructions on how to cast your ballot using the internet voting system will be sent in early January, according to city new release.

Online voting for the 2022 byelection will be available from 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, until 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, 2022.

In-person voting will be available on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2022 and Sunday, Jan. 23, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on voting day, Monday Jan. 24, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

To vote you must be:

  • at least 18 years of age;
  • a Canadian citizen;
  • a resident of the City of Richmond Hill; or the owner or tenant of land in Richmond Hill (or the spouse of an owner or tenant of land); and
  • not otherwise prohibited by law from voting.
