York Region has issued a public notice about COVID-19 exposures at a youth basketball tournament at the Vaughan Sportsplex Aug. 28 to 29.

Anyone who attended the weekend Canadian Youth Basketball League Middle School Boys Tournament at 8301 Keele St. may have been exposed to the virus and is at risk of transmitting it to others, according to the public health unit.

As of Monday, Sept. 6, two confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been linked to the tournament.

The public notice was issued due to a lack of contact tracing information.

York Region Public Health said it “continues to work with the Vaughan Sportsplex to collect attendee information, however many in attendance at this event provided incorrect names, phone numbers and email addresses.”

They said this has been an ongoing problem in York Region, with individuals, venues and event hosts not providing honest and accurate contact information.

Residents are asked to work with public health on contact tracing efforts to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the community and for people and venues to maintain a history of contacts in the event of a positive test.

“Providing Public Health with a history of all contacts and contact information if you test positive for COVID-19 helps us with contact tracing, our most effective tool to slow the spread of the virus and interrupt further transmission,” the notice states.
