10 Black students receive 2022 NACCA scholarships

Newmarket African Caribbean Canadian Association annually recognizes students for superior academic performance, outstanding leadership and commitment to community service

Ten young scholars on their way to university are being recognized with scholarships up to $5,000 by the Newmarket African Caribbean Canadian Association (NACCA).

The recipients are Bradley Barham, Cameron Davis, Korine Edwards, Daneika Hammith, Chanah-Danae Amarissa James, Ta'jaun Larteh, Addisababa O’Brien-Thompson, Deborah Ojo, Tammy Oladipo and Tsid Tomori. 

Davis is the recipient of the Iris Malcolm Memorial Award.

"Cameron is an outstanding student who inspires us all with his passion for empowering youth to  find their voice. His voice has been instrumental in providing insight on the implications of anti Black racism on Canadian youth," said NACCA chairperson Jerisha Grant-Hall in a news release. "We are excited to support Cameron with his academic pursuits and political aspirations."  

Edwards and Ojo are the recipients of the Wasim Jarrah Business  Award. 

"Korine and Deborah are outstanding students who have demonstrated excellence in their studies and have been accepted to commerce programs at the University of British Columbia and Toronto Metropolitan University," said Jerisha Grant-Hall. "We are excited to witness what the future has in store for these young leaders and are happy to  support their academic goals."

The York Region students, who are beginning post-secondary studies in fields that include social science, psychology, commerce, international development, science, political science and law, are receiving the scholarships for superior academic performance, outstanding leadership and commitment to community service.

"NACCA is extremely proud of its scholarship program which supports young people thereby  providing opportunities for the community to flourish," said Jerisha Grant-Hall.

"Our scholarship recipients are high achievers who exemplify pride in their self-identity and  commitment to service in the broader community. They demonstrate a strong capacity for  leadership both now and into the future. The NACCA scholarship award recognizes what these remarkable young people have already achieved and opens the door for them to build on their passions in the pursuit of uplifting their community," she said. 

NACCA is hosting the Class of 2022 scholarship and award ceremony Wednesday, July 6 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Old Town Hall. To RSVP, email [email protected]
