INSIDE THE VILLAGE: A 'no-brainer' idea to help ease our housing crisis

This week on the podcast: Have you ever heard of housing over parking? Let us tell you about it — and why more and more cities think the concept could help combat Ontario's rising rates of homelessness

Welcome back to Inside the Village, a one-of-a-kind podcast where all news is local — and no topic is off-limits.

On this week's episode: Housing over parking.

Never heard of such a thing? You will.

In December, Cambridge city councillor Scott Hamilton brought forward an interesting idea to combat the housing crisis: allow developers to lease city-owned parking lots and build affordable housing over top of the spots. Picture an apartment building on stilts, with cars parked underneath.

Although Hamilton's motion to explore the possibility was voted down 5-4, other municipalities took notice. Last week, Guelph's mayor said he would use his new "strong mayor" powers to compel city staff to study the concept of building residential units above city-owned parking lots.

Hamilton joins us on this week's podcast, along with University of Waterloo professor Brian Doucet, the Canada Research Chair in Urban Change and Social Inclusion.

Also on the show: A war of words has erupted between the presidents of two Ontario colleges — and it all began with some remarks made during last week's episode of Inside the Village.

Hosted by Scott Sexsmith and Michael Friscolanti, the Editor-in-Chief of Village Media, Inside the Village is a news and current affairs podcast that provides a weekly window into some of the best local journalism from across our chain of Ontario newsrooms. Produced by Derek Turner, the program also explores bigger-picture issues that impact people across the province.
