York Region COVID-19 cases near 700, deaths rise to 29

Institutional outbreaks have increased to 16 at long-term care homes and community care facilities

York Region's confirmed COVID-19 cases approach 700, as institutional outbreaks continue to increase, and three more deaths have occurred.

The 18 new cases today, April 12, include two in Newmarket, one of which is a health care worker, bringing the Newmarket total to 48 and York Region's total to 697.

The first COVID-19 related death of a Richmond Hill resident has occurred, as well as an additional death each in Markham, where the majority of the region's 29 fatalities have occurred, and in Vaughan. 

Institutional outbreaks have spiked dramatically in York Region, including at Newmarket's Southlake Residential Care Village, Eagle Terrace Long-Term Care Home and Mackenzie Place Long-Term Care, as well as Chartwell Aurora Long-Term Care Residence.

Additional long-term care facilities and retirement homes among the 11 under COVID-19 protocols today are Sunrise of Unionville and Villa Columbo Vaughan.

Kerry's Place Autism Services in Pefferlaw is now among the five community care settings with COVID-19 outbreaks. 

Of the 697 cases in York Region:

  • 334 are confirmed in Vaughan (+ 10 today), 9 deaths;
  • 162 in Markham (+ 5 today), 17 deaths;
  • 88 in Richmond Hill (- 4 today), 1 death;
  • 48 in Newmarket (+ 2 today); 
  • 29 in Aurora (+ 1 today), 1 death;
  • 11 in Whitchurch-Stouffville;
  • 12 in King, 1 death;
  • 9 in East Gwillimbury (+ 1 today);
  • 4 in Georgina.

The number of hospitalized patients in York Region decreased from 45 to 44 today, with 23 cases critically ill in ICU. 

Resolved cases in the region now tally 96, which is about 14 per cent of the total 697 cases.

As of 4:30 p.m. today, Southlake Regional Health Centre is reporting 10 COVID-19 patients are in ICU, and seven COVID-19 patients are in an inpatient unit. Fifteen patients are under investigation for COVID-19.

The total number of infected health-care workers, which may include physicians, nurses and paramedics, remains at 51 today: seven in Newmarket; one in Aurora, three in Whitchurch-Stouffville; five in Richmond Hill, 14 in Vaughan; and 21 in Markham.
