York Region COVID-19 cases hit a new one-day high

York Region is reporting 187 new cases Nov. 10, while Newmarket is counting its highest number of new cases during the 2nd wave of the pandemic at 13

York Region is reporting its highest single-day COVID-19 case count since the pandemic began with 187 new cases confirmed Nov. 10.

Ontario also tracked a new one-day high today, with 1,388 confirmed COVID-19 cases  — with Toronto and Peel hotspots accounting for 520 and 395 cases respectively.

York Region Public Health has reported several recording-breaking daily case counts in recent weeks, the previous high on Oct. 27, with 131 cases confirmed. 

During the first wave of the pandemic, the highest single daily case count was 70 cases on April 13.

"Our behaviours in the coming days and weeks are critical," said York Region spokesperson Patrick Casey. "We must work together to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in our community."

Thirteen new COVID-19 cases were confirmed in Newmarket today, which is the highest single-day increase during the second wave of the pandemic.

The highest daily case count for Newmarket remains 20, reported on April 19, at the peak of an outbreak at Mackenzie Place Long-term Care that exposed 80 of its 90 residents and 24 health-care workers.

In the last seven days, York Region has reported 824 cases, closing in on a total of 8,000 cases as of Nov. 10, with active cases climbing to 973 and deaths to 288 with three more fatalities today. Outbreaks, particularly in long-term care and retirement homes, are slowly rising with 57 of 298 currently active. 

Newmarket has added 38 cases in the last seven days, with Nov. 10's 13 cases bringing its total count to 448, with 40 active cases, with three of 14 outbreaks active.

Of York Region's nine municipalities, Newmarket (population about 91,300) has the fifth highest number of cases per 100,000 population, above Richmond Hill (population about 235,000) and Whitchurch-Stouffville (population about 82,100) to the south.
