Public art campaign aims to lift spirits, support Main Street restaurants

'We Will Hug Again': Watch for the signs in the windows of restaurants in the downtown core, and be prepared to smile

A new public art campaign on Newmarket's Main Street aims to spread uplifting messages that will leave you smiling while supporting local restaurants offering take-out during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Inspired by globally renowned American light artist Olivia Steele, the Smiles for Take-out campaign features signs posted in Main Street restaurant windows that will help spread hope and encouragement to residents during the pandemic, said Shirin Ganji, chair of Global Intersections, a Newmarket group that fosters a community of understanding, inclusion and respect.

The messages include We Will Hug Again, and Grow Through What You Go Through.

Newmarket Signarama owner Nestor Satumba is sponsoring the campaign by providing the public art displays to any Main Street restaurant wishing to join the Smiles for Take-out campaign, Ganji said.

"Mirroring and attempting to conceptualize Olivia’s art form, our intention is to bring a smile to people as they are picking up their food or simply passing by. We want to emphasize solidarity, show our support for local businesses and lighten the mood by advocating positivity," Ganji added.

To join the campaign, email [email protected] or call 289-807-3377.
