Public Health Ontario has reported 5,839 new cases of COVID-19 since Dec. 31.
The province posted two daily updates today after not posting a report on Jan. 1. There were 2,476 new cases included in the Jan. 1 report, and 3,363 new cases included in the Jan. 2 report.
The province reported 51 deaths for Jan. 1 and 44 deaths for Jan. 2. Of those, 37 were residents of long-term care homes. One of the deaths reported was an individual between 40 and 59 years old, 24 were between 60 and 79 years old, and 71 were over the age of 80. The report also notes one death of an individual between 20 and 39 years old previously reported has now been removed from the list.
Since Dec. 31, 214 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19, and 40 COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units.
Today's two updates provided by the province's public health agency today also reported the following:
- 2,460 new recoveries for Jan. 1 and 2,054 recoveries for Jan. 2. A total of 4,514 recoveries reported since Dec. 31.
- 1,003 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, down from 1,235 reported Dec. 31.
- There are 322 COVID patients in intensive care units (down from 337 on Dec. 31) and 220 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 210 Dec. 31)
- 22,847 current active cases in Ontario, which is up from 21,617 reported Dec. 31
- The province reported 70,570 tests processed in the Jan. 1 report and 61,401 processed in the Jan. 2 report for per cent positivity rates of 5.3 per cent and 6 per cent respectively. The province's goal is three per cent.
- Of the 5,839 cases reported since Dec. 31, 1,199 are from Toronto, 1,193 are from Peel, 695 are from York Region, and 111 are from Simcoe-Muskoka.
- Based on Jan. 1 and 2 case data reported today, the new cases include 766 people under 20, 2,123 people between 20 and 39 years old, 1,727 people between 40 and 59 years old, 877 people between 60 and 79 years old, and people over the age of 80.
Public Health Ontario has confirmed 187,998 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 160,526 recoveries and 4,625 deaths, of which 2,814 were individuals living in long-term care homes
The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 1,264.8 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario. The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 110.7 cases per 100,000 people from Dec. 23 to 29, which is up by 1.6 per cent compared to Dec. 17 to 23 when the average weekly incidence rate was 109 cases per 100,000 people.
