Number of COVID-19 patients in Southlake's ICU rises to 9

The number of people being treated for COVID-19 at Southlake Regional Health Centre continues to rise, with nine patients in intensive care, and with the total number of confirmed cases in York Region totalling 141 today, March 27.

York Region is reporting nine new confirmed COVID-19 cases today. No further details are available currently.

A Vaughan woman in her 80s who died yesterday — York Region's second COVID-19 related death — acquired the virus from local transmission, according to York Region public health.

She was tested on March 23, and had multiple underlying health conditions.

The 25 patients who tested positive for coronavirus at Southlake's COVID-19 assessment centre and emergency department are in self isolation. As of 4 p.m. today, 41 inpatients are under investigation for COVID-19 at the Newmarket hospital. Of the nine patients in intensive care, three are awaiting COVID-19 test results.

Twelve of the cases in York Region are health-care workers.

The majority of cases in the region are under investigation, indicating the likelihood of local transmission or community spread.

Of the 137 cases in York Region confirmed yesterday, 49 are in Vaughan; 41 in Markham, 15 in Richmond Hill, 10 in Newmarket; eight in Whitchurch-Stouffville; five in Aurora; four in East Gwillimbury, and three in King Township. One case is outside the region. Location is pending in one case. One case is resolved.

Tonight, March 27, the province is reporting a lower number for its total confirmed cases, decreasing from 993 this morning to 967. For the first time this morning, no details were provided regarding the new cases.

The number of COVID-19 related deaths in Ontario remains at 18, with eight cases resolved. Close to 30,000 individuals have tested negative, the province reports.

Hospital staff are not authorized to release test results over the phone or by text. Please do not call the hospital to ask for your test results.
