Local home and auto insurance company The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group is taking the ‘suck’ out of this COVID-lockdown summer by giving $1,000 awards to 100 Grade 12 students across Ontario.

The company is asking for lockdown lessons learned from Grade 12 students through simple 30-second to one-minute (maximum of two-minute) videos. The videos are simply uploaded by eligible students and posted to the Commonwell website here.

The videos can be about any lesson learned by Grade 12 Ontario students outside of the classroom with complete creative control by the students.  It is simple and easy to do.

They can be done as simple as leaving a quick video message or made as creatively as they like.

“These are unprecedented times and we are all learning unique lessons while we live during this pandemic,” said Tim Shauf, President and CEO of The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group.

“We know that there is a lot of learning and growing up going on for Ontario students outside the classroom right now and we wanted to find a way to celebrate that while helping these students financially prepare for the next stage in their education.”

The $1,000 awards are to be applied towards post-secondary education for the winning students, who must also be graduating high school and starting post-secondary school in 2020.

What sudents have learned so far:
(Videos are online here as a sample gallery of entries)

  • Nadia from Prince Edward County learned to not be dismissive of her mental health issues during COVID-19.
  • Jewel from Collingwood learned that prom dresses aren’t just for dances, they are great for workouts and specifically pull-ups.
  • Abbey from Markham learned that she didn’t have to be constantly busy to be happy.
  • Sarah from Newmarket learned the importance of her relationship with her community.
  • Anastasia from Collingwood learned that books can ‘solve all problems.’
  • Lauren from Waterloo learned ‘gratitude.’
  • Kaitlyn from Inverary (near Kingston) learned to live in the moment because she had her last day of high school in March (before COVID) and didn’t know things were going to change.
  • Roderick from Aurora learned how to be productive by taking online courses and how to cherish his friends even more.

“With this contest, we’re seeing an interesting mix of humour and serious video submissions that are giving us a really interesting insight into what our kids are really going through,” added Shauf. "We want to support their continued development into active participants and leaders for our communities of the future.”

Graduating Ontario students can apply for the Lockdown Lessons awards up until Wednesday, July 22, 2020 with a 30-second to one-minute (2-minute maximum) video by visiting https://thecommonwell.ca/lockdown101
