Newmarket spa charged for opening in lockdown

A Newmarket spa was among 10 York Region businesses and individuals charged with violating lockdown restrictions in the last week. 

Rose Retreat Health at 16715 Yonge St. was given a fine totalling $880 by Newmarket bylaw enforcement for opening despite being a non-essential business. It was the only Newmarket business charged between Dec. 28 and Jan. 3. 

Bylaw officers carried out 121 inspections in Newmarket during the past week, and every one of those businesses was issued an education notice.

The Aqua Grill restaurant at 15150 Yonge St. was fined by Aurora bylaw enforcement for allowing indoor dining.

Two private residences were also hit with fines, including one in Whitchurch-Stouffville where the owner received two charges for exceeding gathering limits, and another homeowner in Vaughan fined for having people attend a social gathering indoors. 

Across York Region, there were 700 inspections conducted and a total of 11 charges laid.

York Region's director of communications, Patrick Casey, said that officers from the COVID-19 task force will continue to visit essential businesses and various other locations to ensure public health measures under the provincewide shutdown are being met.

"Businesses failing to keep their customers and employees safe by not adhering to the mandated COVID-19 safety measures will be subject to fines. Repeat offenders could face temporary closure," said Casey.
