Newmarket pub, nail salon among 34 charged with COVID-19 violations

Newmarket's Grey Goat Pub and Yolanda Nails and Spa are among 34 York Region businesses fined for breaking COVID-19 public health restrictions this past week. 

The Grey Goat Pub and Grill on Main Street was charged under Newmarket's emergency measures bylaw for not complying with provincial regulations regarding face coverings, according to a York Region public notice for inspections from Feb. 22 to 28.

The Grey Goat was the first business in York Region to be charged with breaking public health rules last August for failing to maintain customer records for contact tracing for at least a month.

Meanwhile, Yolanda Nails and Spa on Davis Drive was also issued a fine totalling $880 for operating while under a provincial lockdown. 

York Region transitioned to the red control zone from lockdown and the stay at home order on Feb. 22. 

Newmarket bylaw officers performed a total of 304 inspections Feb. 22 to 28, and gave out just as many education notices, plus the two charges.

A total of 34 charges were laid by members of York Region's COVID-19 enforcement task force across the region over the same period:

  • York Region Public Health: 4
  • York Region Transit: 4
  • York Regional Police: 7
  • Markham: 5
  • Newmarket: 2 
  • Richmond Hill: 4 
  • Vaughan 8

Inspectors also visited 1,745 businesses and issued 635 education notices.  

Other charges from around the region include Dalarian Jewellry in Markham, where the owner and a customer were found not wearing masks. 

Fortinos in Vaughan is charged with failing to limit the number of customers to ensure physical distancing.

And QQ Spa in Richmond Hill was fined for having a patron not wearing a face covering. 

Several other businesses were fined a total of $880 each for failing to post maximum capacity signs, including the LCBO and Sleep Country Canada on Weston Road in Vaughan.
