A clothing retailer at Newmarket's Upper Canada mall was among 67 businesses and individuals charged for COVID-19 public health violations in York Region last week.

Designer Row faces a total fine of $880 for not screening its employees for COVID-19 and not having a safety plan available.

Newmarket bylaw enforcement officers did not lay any charges, but carried out 360 inspections March 8 to 14, and issued 120 education notices.

The majority of charges — 48 — were laid by Vaughan enforcement officers for a social gathering at a private residence.

Several restaurants across York Region were hit with fines as well, most of whom were caught breaking the rule limiting the number of indoor patrons to 10 or not keeping patrons spaced out properly. However, some were also caught allowing dancing or live music.

Last week, medical officer of health Dr. Karim Kurji voiced his frustration with restaurants for not following the rules and contributing to a resurgence in cases that prevented York Region from being moved into the orange-restrict zone on Monday.

Across York Region, 1,863 inspections were done and 469 education notices were issued.

The charges by agency included:

  • York Region Public Health - 3
  • York Region Transit - 2
  • City of Richmond Hill - 1
  • City of Markham - 1
  • Town of Vaughan - 60
