Stay home for the celebration, York Region's medical officer of health is reminding local residents as the holiday weekend approaches.

While Easter, Passover and Ramadan are celebrations usually shared with family and friends, the COVID-19 pandemic has put that on hold this year.

"Holidays are typically a time to reflect, gather and celebrate. The reality is these are not typical times," Dr. Karim Kurji said.

Not only for religious events but for occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries, the physical distancing guidelines must be followed if we are to halt the spread of COVID-19, he said.

Celebrate "in a different way", Dr. Kurji said, using technology to connect with people not in your household.

"We encourage you to stay connected and celebrate with loved ones and friends over the phone, on video chat or by doing at-home activities with those in your household."

The province has prohibited all organized public events of more than five people, including parades, weddings, events and communal services within places of worship, until further notice.

You are reminded to follow these guidelines:

  • Stay home whenever possible
  • Avoid non-essential trips in the community
  • Postpone or cancel all gatherings
  • Practise physical distancing (stay 2 metres away from others) at all times
  • Wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly and often
