COVID-19 death toll mounts to three in outbreak at Newmarket group home

A 72-year-old man passed away Tuesday in the outbreak that has infected 64 people

A third resident has died in the COVID-19 outbreak at The Newmarket Residence.

The 72-year-old Newmarket man passed away Tuesday, March 9 at Cortelucci Vaughan Hospital, according to York Region spokesperson Patrick Casey.

The date of symptom onset was Friday, Feb. 12, with a positive test confirmed Friday, Feb. 19, Casey added.

A second resident death was reported yesterday for a 65-year-old man who also passed away Tuesday, March 9 at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket.

A 78-year-old man was the first resident to die on Wednesday, Feb. 10 in the outbreak that was declared at the community living home on Feb. 3.

The outbreak began with one positive resident case, then jumped to 26 resident cases on the following day, Feb. 4, eventually spiralling to 54 of 70 residents. All 10 members of the staff have also been infected. 

Privately owned and operated by Icilda Tate, the group home is in East Gwillimbury on RR 3, however, it has a Newmarket mailing address, 3248 Davis Dr., and is tracked by the public health unit as a Newmarket facility.
