Backlog decreasing as Ontario reports another 9,000 COVID-19 tests completed

Total cases in the province reach 8,961, as COVID-19 outbreaks in long-term care homes continue to rise

The province is reporting 9,001 COVID-19 tests were completed yesterday, on the heels of 6,000 the day prior, as total confirmed cases reach 8,961.

Ontario health officials had said daily output would rise to about 8,000 tests by April 15, 12,500 tests a day by April 22 and 16,000 tests per day by May 6.

Increasing Ontario's lab testing capacity has eliminated a backlog of approximately 10,000 people within less than two weeks, according to the province.

To date, the province has conducted more than 128,000 tests.

York Region medical officer of health Dr. Karim Kurji is now urging residents with any COVID-19 symptoms to go to an assessment centre at Southlake Regional Health Centre, Mackenzie Health or Markham Stouffville Hospital.

Ontario added 514 confirmed COVID-19 cases today. The highest number of cases reported in a single day in Ontario was 552 on April 8.

Newmarket marked the largest single-day increase in confirmed COVID-19 cases, with 12 new cases pushing its total to 72 yesterday.

York Region reported 883 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 59 additional cases yesterday, and its 42nd fatality. 

Martin Frogley was a resident of Markham's Participation House, where 37 of 42 residents have tested positive for COVID-19, as well as 12 employees. 

In Ontario, the death toll increased today by 38 deaths, yesterday was the highest one-day increase with 51 deaths reported.

One person between the ages of 20 to 39 has died, 26 people between the ages of 40 and 59 have died, 133 people between the ages of 60 and 79 have died, and 266 people over the age of 80 have died.

Ontario is reporting 104 outbreaks at long-term care homes. Premier Doug Ford said yesterday there were 114 outbreaks in long-term care facilities.

Institutional outbreaks continue to increase in York Region, jumping from 21 to 27 yesterday, and including COVID-19 outbreaks at Southlake Residential Care Village, Eagle Terrace Long-Term Care Home and Mackenzie Place Long-Term Care in Newmarket.

In Ontario, there are 4,194 recoveries, 423 deaths, and 807 patients currently hospitalized for the virus.

About 25 per cent of confirmed cases are reported as community transmission and 13 per cent have been confirmed in people who travelled within the 14 days before becoming ill. Seventeen per cent of the provinces cases are attributed to close contact, and for 44 per cent transmission information is pending.
