Members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Women's Association recently made personal delivery of pizza and other gifts to a Blue Door shelter in Newmarket.
The donation of food and essential items on Jan. 14 is just one of many charitable works the women's group has been undertaking over the past few weeks to help mitigate the hardships caused by the pandemic.
"The pandemic is a golden opportunity for us to help serve humanity," said Riffat Hina, association president. "So we have been trying to help the community where ever the need is."
Last month, the Bradford-based association donated about 1,400 pounds of food to organizations around the Greater Toronto Area.
They chose Blue Door as one of the recipients, said Hina, after looking around the region for a homeless shelter. After visiting the facility, the staff gave them some details on what they could do to help the clients.
Although they have been donating fresh produce to other recipients, they bought pizza for the shelter instead due to restrictions on bringing outside food into the shelter.
"They were so happy. We will try our best to provide more support once a month. We'll see how it goes," she said.
