As the first long weekend of the summer approaches, Central York Fire Services (CYFS) is urging residents to celebrate responsibly. With the excitement of fireworks lighting up the sky, it’s crucial to remember safety and consideration for the community, including our pets.
In Newmarket and Aurora, fireworks can only be purchased and used during Victoria Day and Canada Day weekends. It’s important to note that using fireworks on public property, such as parks, streets, and open spaces, is strictly prohibited. Violations of this rule can result in hefty fines starting at $600, as per Fireworks By-law 2015-18 in Newmarket and Fireworks By-law 5373-11 in Aurora.
Residents can report any bylaw infractions by contacting:
- Town of Newmarket: 905-895-5193 (press 3 for after-hours line)
- Town of Aurora: 905-727-3123 (follow the prompts for after-hours bylaw service)
Before igniting the night with fireworks, here are some rules and safety advice to follow:
- Fireworks are permitted on private property with a minimum front width of 18 metres (59 ft.). Renters require written permission from the homeowner.
- Usage is allowed on specific dates:
- Newmarket: May 19, 20, 21
- Aurora: May 19 and 20
- Fireworks are permitted between dusk (approximately 9:30 p.m.) and 11 p.m.
- Must be 18 years or older to discharge fireworks.
- Purchase your fireworks from reputable sources and avoid illegal explosives.
- Keep a safe distance from people and structures. Never relight an ineffective firework.
- Dispose of fireworks as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
Please consider the comfort of your neighbors and their pets during the celebrations. Animal Services provides tips for protecting your dogs during fireworks displays, such as creating a safe space indoors and ensuring microchip details are up-to-date.
If you’re heading to a cottage or trailer, familiarize yourself with local bylaws regarding fireworks and outdoor burning.
Always have a water source ready when dealing with flames but remember not to use water on grease fires. In case of an uncontrollable fire, evacuate and call 9-1-1.
