Environment Canada has issued a winter weather travel advisory beginning this afternoon and continuing into early Friday for Newmarket and area.
A snowfall of five to 10 centimetres, most of it falling tonight, is forecast — the largest snowfall this season, and the first significant snowfall for many parts of the Golden Horseshoe.
Poor winter driving conditions are expected, with commutes this evening and into Friday morning being impacted.
Motorists should plan for extra time to reach their destination, Environment Canada advises, noting untreated roads may become snow covered and slippery.
The snow will become mixed with rain Friday as temperatures edge above the 0 Celcius mark.
The snowfall is associated with a deepening low pressure system moving along the Eastern Seaboard of the United States to southern Ontario.
The weather advisory is in effect for Newmarket, Georgina, Richmond Hill, Markham and Vaughan in York Region, and in Pickering, Oshawa, Uxbridge and Beaverton in Durham.
