The Better Living Charitable Foundation is hosting two exciting fundraisers next week in support of the Margaret Bahen Hospice and the Doane House Hospice: the annual Tee Off For Hospice golf tournament on September 16 and the second annual Handbags for Hospice.

There is still time to get involved in both events as a participant or sponsor, so act now before the final tickets are sold!

Both events support very worthy causes.

Doane House Hospice is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for individuals coping with life-threatening illnesses and their caregivers. They offer non-medical support in the community including emotional, spiritual, and physical care, to help individuals make informed decisions about their care. The hospice provides a range of services such as art therapy, bereavement programs, caregiver support, and mindfulness for health.

Margaret Bahen Hospice provides on-site exceptional end-of-life care, ensuring that individuals can spend their final days with dignity and comfort. The hospice focuses on creating a home-like environment where patients and their families receive comprehensive support, including medical, emotional, and spiritual care.

Better Living is an organization committed to enhancing the quality of life for seniors and individuals in the Don Mills and North York areas. It offers a wide range of services, including community programs, long-term care, meal delivery, transportation, and social and educational activities. Their goal is to support seniors in living healthy and safely at home for as long as possible.

Jennifer Adams, Vice President, Philanthropy & Communications, is excited to share details of the two fundraising events.

“At this year’s golf tournament, we are excited to combine two events into one, allowing participants the choice to support hospice programs in York Region or seniors programs in Don Mills,” she shares.

“The tournament promises a day filled with enjoyable contests, including two hole-in-one challenges. The event will also feature a silent auction with items such as Apple AirPods and a live auction offering a 10-person private suite for one game in the upcoming Raptors season. Additionally, a 50/50 draw is open to all (in attendance or not) with tickets available online until 11:59 PM on Sunday, September 15. The draw will occur during the tournament, and winners will be notified via email.”

Handbags for Hospice aims to follow last year’s success with an even grander event this year.

“This chic cocktail event centres around gently loved handbags, featuring a variety of activities including a purse raffle and a What's in Your Purse game,” says Adams.

“Attendees can purchase a handbag containing gift cards worth $25 or more, supporting local businesses. The mystery purse raffle offers a chance to win a purse filled with swag. The live auction will include high-end designer bags, such as an authenticated Burberry valued at over $1,000 and a Coach bag. The event will also feature a Golden Ticket raffle, where the winner selects an item from the high-end designer auction block and takes that purse out of bidding. Enjoy the photo booth and a complimentary beverage as you indulge in this evening.”

Both events aim to bridge the $850,000 annual fundraising gap required to sustain the hospices, which each need $1.85 million yearly to operate. A million is provided by government funding. The rest is provided by donations and participation in fundraisers like the ones listed above.

Adams concludes, “We rely on community generosity to continue offering our essential services. Sponsorship and auction donation opportunities are still available for both events. Please consider supporting us to help us maintain our commitment to quality care and community service.”
