Since 1872, the Newmarket Citizens Band is the oldest continuously functioning community band in Canada. We welcome musicians teen-aged and older to join this historic Newmarket cultural institution. Check out the links below.
Thanks Richard. Our 150th birthday is indeed on the horizon, in 2022 to be precise. We are hard at work with plans to mark this important milestone.
FYI - the first photo was taken at Niagara Falls on Aug 8, 1883, 6 weeks after the opening of Newmarket's newly built Town Hall, and the Band was there, of course.
The Fireman's Brigade sponsored the day trip, which saw 250 citizens or so from Newmarket and area, plus the Band, head out by train and steamer ship to a fun filled day at Niagara Falls. From the account in the Era newspaper later that week, a good time was had by all!
In 1988, artist Lynda Baird, won a competition to provide an art piece to be hung in the new Town Offices on Mulock. This photo was, in part, her inspiration for her large wall sculpture - The Trading Tree, which was hung in the lobby. In 2019, it was moved and installed above the atrium stairwell in the Old Town Hall - a fitting coming home of sorts, from the Band's point of view. Check it out! NCB
