York Regional Police host flag-raising ceremony

Ceremony honouring Transgender Day of Remembering will take place on Wednesday morning

York Regional Police will be raising the transgender flag in honour of the Transgender Day of Remembrance outside of York Regional Police Headquarters.

Members of the media and the community are invited to join us at York Regional Police Headquarters, located at 47 Don Hillock Drive in Aurora, on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2019, at 8 a.m. as we honour those who have lost their lives to as a result of transphobia.

This is also a day to raise awareness about the continued violence endured by transgender people.

Dr. Alex Abramovich, from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, will be speaking about the high rates of homelessness and violence for trans youth and Tatiana Ferguson, a Sexual Health Educator, Project Coordinator and Human Rights Advocate will also be speaking at the event. At the conclusion of our ceremony, attendees will help us raise the trans flag in honour of the occasion.

Registration is required and can be done online at yrp.ca/TDOR York Regional Police is committed to supporting the 2SLGBTQ+ community both internally among our members, as well as externally with our citizens.

In 2014, York Regional Police formed the Pride Internal Support Network (ISN) which has grown to become a resource for not only members but the community. The ISN is comprised of both sworn and civilian members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community as well as friends, family members and allies.

York Regional Police is proud to enjoy strong community partnerships with organizations such as PFLAG York Region, York Pride, the Aids Committee of York Region, 360˚kids, the Canadian Mental Health Association, York Region District School Board and Family Services of York Region and many others in celebrating diversity and promoting inclusivity.

Through these partnerships and collaborative efforts, we combat hate in all its forms and work to enhance the quality of life for all members of our diverse community.
