UPDATE: more photos; the incident Monday afternoon on the Main Street Newmarket boutique hotel site prompted a large emergency response

A construction worker was trapped under a large steel beam at the construction site for the new Postmark Hotel on Main Street Newmarket.

York Regional Police provided minimal details but said officers responded to the call, as well as an air ambulance. There were also fire trucks and ambulances on the scene.

The worker was "carefully transferred from the roof to an ambulance," then airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre via an Ornge air ambulance, according to Central York Fire Services.

The incident occurred at about 1 p.m. Feb. 27 at the hotel at Main Street and Park Avenue.

The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development said it was notified of an injury at a construction project in Newmarket on Feb. 27.

An inspector is on the scene, an engineer is on route, and the investigation is ongoing, it said.
