Whitchurch-Stouffville man arrested in donation box theft

Review of a Main Street store's video surveillance led to the charge of theft, York Regional Police say

Investigators with the York Regional Police #5 District Criminal Investigations Bureau have charged a 49-year-old man following the theft of a donation box in the Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville.

On Monday, Jan. 27, 2020, York Regional Police responded to a store located at 5779 Main St. for a report of a theft of a donation box. When officers arrived, they spoke with an employee who advised that they had noticed the donation box was missing. Following a review of video surveillance, they saw that on Jan. 23, 2020, a man removed a donation bin that contained funds to support Australia wild fire relief.

Investigators were able to identify the suspect and on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2020, investigators arrested the suspect at his residence.

Charged:

  • Christopher King, 49, Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville

Charges:

  • Theft under $5,000

Mr. King is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on Feb. 26, 2020.
