'Well-dressed' suspect flees with cash following armed bank robbery in Markham

Investigators with the York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit are seeking a suspect and any witnesses following a bank robbery in the City of Markham.

On Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022, at approximately 7:30 a.m., York Regional Police responded to a bank located on Woodbine Avenue, just north of Steeles Avenue, for a report of a robbery.

Officers learned a male suspect armed with a handgun approached the employees as they were entering the bank prior to opening. He demanded access to a vault and was able to obtain a quantity of currency before fleeing on foot.

The suspect was described as male, Black, 30 to 40 years, approximately 6’, medium build and well-dressed. He was wearing a light-grey long coat, a grey winter hat, dark pants, dark gloves and a black balaclava.

Investigators from the Hold-Up Unit remind business owners of the importance of maintaining and updating video surveillance equipment. Quality images help to identify suspects, can aid in arrests and have a tremendous impact during court proceedings.
