UPDATE: Youths aged 13, 15, 16 charged with assault, armed robbery

Investigators with the York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit have arrested three youths following a violent bank robbery in the City of Markham.

On Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2020, at approximately 8 p.m., York Regional Police responded to a robbery in progress at a bank located on Markham Road, north of 16th Avenue, in the City of Markham.

Officers learned that three suspects had arrived at the bank in a vehicle and entered, armed with knives and firearms. The suspects ordered everyone onto the ground and demanded cash from the safe. Two employees of the bank were stabbed and two people had been kicked in the face. All four were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

When the first officer arrived at the scene the suspects attempted to flee on foot. Officers quickly set up a perimeter and members of the Canine Unit tracked the suspects who were hiding in a house under construction. Officers arrested the suspects and recovered two firearms. The vehicle used by the suspects had been stolen on Feb. 10, 2020, during a violent carjacking in the City of Toronto.

Charges have been laid and evidence has been obtained connecting these suspects to additional robberies throughout the Greater Toronto Area. The investigation is ongoing.

  • A 16-year-old male of no fixed address
  • A 15-year-old male of no fixed address
  • A 13-year-old male from the City of Mississauga

Charges: 

  • Robbery with a firearm
  • Aggravated assault
  • Disguise with Intent
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Possession of a firearm knowing possession is unauthorized
  • Possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition
  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited device
  • Possession of property obtained by crime
