Two arrested in connection to May 2019 Markham armed robbery investigation

20-year-old and 17-year-old, both from Toronto, face numerous firearms charges

Investigators with the York Regional Police #5 District Criminal Investigations Bureau have laid charges and seized a replica handgun following an investigation into a robbery that occurred in the City of Markham.

On May 1, 2019 at approximately 11:10 p.m., an adult female victim was walking on Enterprise Boulevard in Markham when a vehicle pulled up behind her. A male and female suspect got out of the vehicle, approached the victim and demanded her personal belongings. One of the suspects was armed with a handgun and the other threatened the victim with a knife. The suspects grabbed her backpack and fled in their vehicle.

Through the investigation, police were able to identify the vehicle and the suspects. On Jan. 15, 2020, the suspects were located and arrested in the City of Toronto. When officers searched the vehicle, they located a replica firearm.

Charged:
    •    Tiago Gomes Xavier, 20, of the City of Toronto
    •    A 17-year-old female, of the City of Toronto

Charges Include:
    •    Robbery with a firearm
    •    Robbery with an offensive weapon
    •    Using imitation firearm in the commission of an offence
    •    Pointing a firearm
    •    Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
    •    Utter death threats

The accused have both been held in custody and will be appearing before the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on Jan. 16, 2020.
