Suspect was armed in attempted bank robbery in Markham, police say

Investigators with the York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit are seeking assistance to identify a suspect following an attempted bank robbery in the City of Markham.

On Monday, Jan. 6, 2020, shortly after 5 p.m., police were called to a bank located in a plaza at 710 Markland Street, which is in the area of Major Mackenzie Drive East and Highway 404, for a report of an attempted robbery.

Investigators believe that a man wearing a mask and carrying a handgun approached the front doors of the bank. The employees saw him and locked the doors before he could get inside. The suspect then left the area.

The suspect is described as:

  • Male, black
  • 5’9”
  • Thin build
  • Wearing a black jacket with a white mask covering his face
  • Armed with a handgun
