Suspect sought in theft of donation box at Hwy 400 rest stop

Police ask for public assistance to identify a man who used bolt cutters to remove a donation box full of cash intended to help fight poverty in our community

Investigators with the York Regional Police #1 District Criminal Investigations Bureau are seeking public assistance to identify a suspect in connection with the theft of a donation box in Vaughan.

On Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2018, at approximately 2:30 a.m., a male suspect entered a rest stop located just off of Highway 400 south of King Road.

The suspect is seen on video handling a donation box full of cash that was affixed to the counter with wire. The suspect unsuccessfully attempts to use a pair of handheld cutters on the wire. The suspect leaves the view of the security cameras and then returns and removes a large set of bolt cutters from his pants. The suspect then cuts the wire and leaves the store with the donation box.

The HMSHost Foundation donation box contained a large quantity of cash and was intended to go towards fighting poverty in our community.

Investigators are releasing video and images of the incident and are seeking public assistance to identify the suspect. Video of the suspect is available for viewing at the following link.

Suspect Description:

  • Male, white 25 to 30
  • 5’6-5’8
  • Medium build
  • Unshaven facial hair
  • Wearing a white long sleeve Adidas shirt, a grey toque, black shorts, green Zoo York under wear, and black shoes
