Suspect arrested in connection with sexual assault in Markham

York Regional Police thanks the media and members of the community after investigators with the Special Victims Unit – Sexual Assault Section laid charges against a 28-year-old man in connection with a sexual assault in the City of Markham.  

On Sunday, April 17, 2022, at approximately 5:10 p.m., a 15-year-old male attended a mall located near Unionville Gate and Kennedy Road in the City of Markham. While at the mall, the victim entered a public washroom sometime between 5:40 p.m. to 5:53 p.m. and was sexually assaulted by an unknown male suspect.  

On Friday, April 22, 2022, as a result of media coverage, the suspect turned himself in and has been charged. Investigators are urging any witnesses, additional victims or anyone with information to please come forward.  

Charged:

  • Gen Li, 28, of the City of Markham

Charges:

  • Sexual assault
  • Sexual interference person under 16 years
  • Invitation sexual touching under 16 years

A sexual assault includes any non-consensual contact of a sexual nature. York Regional Police would like to encourage anyone who feels they may have been a victim of a sexual assault to come forward and report the incident to police. There is no statute of limitations for sexual offences and offenders can be prosecuted well after the date of the offence.

If you are the survivor of sexual assault, you can report the incident online if:

  • You are not in danger
  • The person who assaulted you is not present
  • There is no evidence present that may be collected by police (blood, semen, saliva, etc.). Evidence can be collected for up to 12 days after the sexual assault has occurred
  • You have access to a private email address, to which the suspect does not have access
