On Monday, Dec. 23, 2019 around 2 p.m., police were called to Canal Road west of Line 5 for a report of a snowmobile through the ice. A 21-year-old man operating the sled and his 22-year-old female passenger were travelling on ice when they thought they saw open water ahead. They tried to turn the sled around but went through the ice in three to four feet of water. Both riders managed to walk to shore and were unhurt. They arranged for the sled to be towed out of the water.

Police want to remind residents that ice is still thin and risky for winter activities. Every rider must be prepared for emergencies by carrying a number of items including a tool kit, spare parts, flashlight, first-aid kit, ice picks and survival items such as high-energy food. If you must drive over ice, wear a buoyant snowmobile suit. And remember that no ice is completely safe.
