The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Tony Loparco, has terminated an investigation into an October 2018 interaction that occurred between a 30-year-old man and officers with York Regional Police (YRP).
On Oct. 18, 2018, YRP officers attempted to arrest the man for a firearm-related offence at a residence on Wilbur Pipher Circle in Newmarket. The man fled into the home, leading officers to contain the area. Sometime later, the man was apprehended as he climbed out of a basement window of the residence. During the arrest, he complained of pain in his ankle and was taken to hospital for treatment.
Director Loparco said, “The medical evidence confirms that the man did not suffer a serious injury. Accordingly, I have terminated the investigation into this incident.”
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must:
• consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
• depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
• report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
