York Regional Police is proud to unveil a new rainbow crosswalk at the Community Safety Village (CSV) in Whitchurch-Stouffville, in celebration of Pride Month.

The rainbow crosswalk, unveiled on June 18, 2021, is a symbol of acceptance and inclusion and that is an important message for our children to see and hear. More than 40,000 students attended the CSV every year prior to COVID-19 and we hope to welcome students back again soon.

With high rates of homelessness, suicide and attempted suicide in the 2SLGBTQ+ youth community, it is more important than ever that young people know they will be welcomed for who they are at our Safety Village.

“We are dedicated to creating safe, welcoming and accepting spaces for members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community,” said Chief Jim MacSween. “By creating a rainbow crosswalk at the Community Safety Village, we are bringing visibility and support to 2SLGBTQ+ individuals.”

The rainbow crosswalk, along with the Human Rights Education classroom which opened in 2020, raises awareness and supports broader education in the areas of human rights, peace building, global citizenship, equity and inclusion.
